The diamond fell out of the setting on my ring a few weeks ago. I’m still on high alert when I sweep or vacuum. I keep thinking I will find it. And, oh, how happy that moment will be! I imagine it in my head. I see the diamond in a corner by a door jamb, in a pile of dust.
There once was a woman, Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel Reading, who lost a coin. She lit a lamp and swept the house. She searched every corner, and when she finally found the coin, she went to her friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.”
Jesus says, that is how God is with the angels in heaven when a sinner repents.
You are the diamond, oh repentant one!
You are in the Mind of God, and He can’t get you out of His Mind.
He wants to find you, in the little pile of dust where you have fallen, and He wants to pick you up as He turns to His Holy Angels.
Look what I have found!
And He will take you, clean you up, and put you in a new setting so that all can see you for who you really are.
His most precious stone, a living stone, a stone that sends a message to everyone who sees it:
I belong to Another. He is mine. And I am His.
And He is love.
